"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world", Ludwig Wittgenstein
"The deeper you go into the desert, the closer you come to God" (Arab proverb)
"We also say of some people that they are transparent to us. It is, however, important as regards this observation that one human being can be a complete enigma to another. We learn this when we come into a strange country with entirely strange traditions; and, what is more, even given mastery of the country’s language. We do not understand the people. (And not because of not knowing what they are saying to themselves.) We cannot find our feet with them." Ludwig Wittgenstein
I am an Australian with Anglo-Welsh parents. I live in Malawi, South-Eastern Africa with my wife and two children where we have lived for more than 13 years. I am a perpetual student (at least that is what it feels like), although I work full time. I have recently completed my PhD, which is a study on the worldview of the Yawo of Malawi through an analysis of their rituals and traditional oral literature. In 2006 I published a book of Yawo traditional proverbs and stories, Wisdom of the Yawo people, Lunda lwa Ŵandu wa Ciyawo. I am currently co-writing a language book on the Yawo language, which my colleague and I hope to publish this year.
